The Foz do Iguaçu International Bus Terminal: buses into and out of the Iguassu Falls Foz do Iguaçu Area

Image
Foz do Iguaçu International Bus Terminal (Rodoviária)'s photo has been taken from their site (link below) The Foz do Iguaçu International Bus Terminal serves over 130 destinations throughout Brazil and into Argentina and Paraguay. Buses leaving Foz do Iguaçu travel to major cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Florianópolis, Porto Alegre, Curitiba but also to far way capitals of Northeastern states like Maceió (Alagoas State), Aracaju (Sergipe), Salvador (Bahia) and Recife (Pernambuco) and hundreds of cities in between. Foz do Iguaçu's ties with North Brazil is also expressive. There are bus lines leaving Foz as the city is lovingly (and not so lovingly) called or reffered to, heading for Campo Grande (gateway to the South Pantanal), Cuiabá (doorway to the Northern Pantanal) as well as the Chapada Guimarães Plateau Area and locations in the Amazonian state of Pará. Lines to central Brazil are also plentiful: Brasilia and Goiania are at the top of the list.

Cognopolis - Iguaçu, Iguassu Falls Area newest neighborhood

Image
Waldo Viera, in white, with white beard and me (Jackson Lima) also with a white beard in the Holotheque, CEAEC , Cognopolis, Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil If you have been following my articles and postings about the Administrative regions of Foz do Iguaçu, you will have noticed that I have been writing about several of the city's "bairros" and their regions. Today I want to bring to your attention a very special neighborhood called COGNOPOLIS - Greek for "Knowledge City". It seems, from what I have gathered that the City Government has already approved most plans and for the new neighborhood of town to get its "Birth Certicate" all that is needed is for the City Council or Counsel to pass the law creating the barrio or neighborhood. Officially it is going to be part of the RURAL AREA SOUTH in Region 12. The word Cognopolis has began to be used rather openly in correspondences, snail mail packages and postmen and postwomen, pizza delivery personnel and

The hostels of Remanso Grande, Iguassu Falls

Image
Photo 1: Ipelandia's swimmingpool area. Photo 2: bus stop serving the hostel areas across from Peace Square (Praça da Paz). On the Brazilian Highway (BR) 469 or Avenida das Cataratas (Cataratas Avenue - Brazil's shortest BR Highway), there is a barrio (neighborhood) called Remanso Grande. Remanso is the name of those pool-like, calm areas that are commons to some river bends. In this case it is also the name of the neighborhood. Unfortunately there is no easy contact with the Iguaçu River below at the end of Remanso Grande main street. But what I want to call your attention to here is to the fact that this region of the city is beginning to be the Foz do Iguaçu Rural Hostel Area. The picture above is from the Bus Stop that serves three hostels but was mainly made by the Paudimar Campestre Hostel owned by an Argentina-born friend of mines called Miguel Allou. I have also learnt that there is a new Natura Hostel owned by a Palestina-born person whom I have not met yet (but I w

The Greater Tres Lagoas Area of Foz do Iguaçu

Image
Photos: Tres Lagoas' Saint Peter's Parrish (Paróquia São Pedro) and Bairro (neighborhood) pioneer Edmundo Roberto Kinner The city of Foz do Iguaçu is divided into 12 regions or areas - for administration purposes. Each region is identified by a number (R-01) or the name of the most prominent bairro in the region or area. For instance, R-01 or Region One is known as the Greater Tres Lagoas Area. The main neighborhood in this case is called Três Lagoas which started out with somebody selling smaller land parcels mostly chunks taken off a small agricultural property and sold to Class E, wage earners to be paid in soft and nearly never-ending 100-installment plans. Some of the bairros in this and in other city areas were the result of invasions or occupations (the choice of either word will denounce political or ideological preference). There are over 9.000 basic education students (from ages 2 to 9) enrolled at 9 city schools. Touristically speaking the area owns some of the city&

The Iguaçu National Park-Brazil: a model to the world ?

Last year an English journalist who had already interviewed me before, so I can call friend, sent an e-mail asking me about the Iguaçu National Park and how I felt, how the local community felt to live near or around a Park that is a model to the world. A model to the world? - I thought. It can not even be a model for the rest of Brazilian National Parks. I don't know how this model idea has spread out, but a I hear this being repeated so much that I am affraid it might become the truth, you know the only truth. So let me tell what I remember about "our" Parks that also happens to be a World Heritage Sites. Since January, 1st, 2000, the Iguassu Falls Visitation Area (VA) on the Brazilian side, and its counterpart on the Argentine side one year before, were handed over as concessions to privately-owned, especially-created companies for that specific purpose. That is the purpose of administering the new or improved infrastructures to cater to tourists needs. These have in
